Ducharme turned a corner for sure. Labrum surgery takes time. Nice to see her have a good game.....But I thought Nika turned a corner too. When she looks to score, the defense has to guard her, opening up the other four players. The assists have to come in the flow of the game with Nika scoring. Otherwise the defense can guard five on four, because Nika is pass first. That's not bad necessarily, but if they have to guard Nika, the other players open up more. REALLY SWEET watching Nika hit those threes.......and watching the floor open up....
The point about Nika is a good one. I like that she’s going “coast to coast” for layups and even driving to the basket in the half court on occasion. This was the second time (ND) that a team sagged off Nika, daring her to beat them. Nika almost always makes you pay for this. She can hit open threes. I imagine when Azzi is back teams will try this more and I hope a game like this gives Nika the confidence to keep shooting if she has early misses.
Hope to see an article -even if it's a brief one- about how the team's foreign players spent their short holiday break. Dorka won't have time to travel to Hungary and back. Nika, Lou and Ines won't have time to go home. Etc. So it would be interesting to learn what they did.
Aaliyah is playing at such a consistent high level. She is so confident she is a pleasure to watch. Everyone played so well 60% field goals and 52% from 3 pt line. And yes it looked like Caroline of old She was in constant motion to get open and not afraid to shoot. So good to see. Yes to many turnovers many by trying to thread the needle with tough passes. Hopefully injury free the rest of the way and with Axzi back a very scary team.
From a fan perspective, this year’s schedule for the UCONN Lady Huskies, is outstanding. It is a bit like having the NCAA tournament in December and January. And with the upgrade of teams like Creighton and DePaul, even the Conference is more fun.
So - Aubrey will always be my fav (after 15/Gabby) - but as an ex-public school teacher I have a soft spot for kids like Caroline - who come in unheralded - over achieve (or maybe not - as Caroline's ceiling has yet to be revealed) - and in the end, prove to be as critical to the success of UConn as the much bally-hooed recruits.
Great game - overall. By the first S.Hall time-out, the win was never in doubt.
